The Nyakagezi Gorilla Encounter

The Nyakagezi family is known for its nomadic past, but they have now settled permanently in Mgahinga. They are a particularly peaceful group with multiple silverbacks, making for spectacular photography in the open bamboo forests.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Mgahinga is the only place in Uganda where you can find these striking, orange-tinted primates.

The Experience: Unlike the methodical gorillas, golden monkeys are fast and playful. They live high in the bamboo zones, providing a lively and energetic forest encounter.

The Batwa Heritage Trail

In Mgahinga, the Batwa Trail is led by the Batwa people themselves.

The Highlight: We take you to the Garama Cave, a 342-meter-long ceremonial site where the Batwa king once hid from enemies. The tour concludes with a hauntingly beautiful traditional performance in the darkness of the cave.

Is it easier to see gorillas in Mgahinga than in Bwindi?

The vegetation in Mgahinga is predominantly bamboo, which is less dense than Bwindi’s thick canopy. This often allows for clearer visibility and better light for photography.

What happens if the Nyakagezi group moves across the border?

While they were once known for crossing into Rwanda and Congo, the group has been resident in Uganda for over a decade. In the extremely rare event they are not accessible, Frena Adventures works with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to rearrange your trek or provide a suitable alternative.

What is the age limit for Golden Monkeys?

Similar to gorilla trekking, the minimum age is 12 years old. However, the hike to see them is generally shorter and less steep, making it a great entry-level primate experience.
