Where Gold Meets Silver
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest yet perhaps most mystical sanctuary. Part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, it is the only place in the country where “Gold meets Silver”—the golden monkeys and the mountain gorillas. At Frena Adventures, we view Mgahinga as the quintessential “boutique” park, offering a more intimate, quieter, and deeply spiritual alternative to the busier primate circuits.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
The Boutique Experience
Mgahinga is defined by its three towering extinct volcanoes: Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo. We curate your visit to be as much about the dramatic volcanic landscape as it is about the primates.
- Exclusive Gorilla Tracking: Unlike Bwindi, which has dozens of groups, Mgahinga is home to only one habituated family—the Nyakagezi Group. Because only 8 permits are available per day, your experience is inherently exclusive and peaceful.
- Dual Primate Privilege: We are the only operator that expertly layers gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking in the same 48-hour window, ensuring you see the best of the Virungas.
- The “Three-Country” Summit: For our high-end adventure guests, we arrange a private hike to the peak of Mount Sabinyo. At the summit, you can stand in one spot and be in Uganda, Rwanda, and the DR Congo simultaneously.
Signature Mgahinga Experiences
- The Nyakagezi Gorilla Encounter
The Nyakagezi family is known for its nomadic past, but they have now settled permanently in Mgahinga. They are a particularly peaceful group with multiple silverbacks, making for spectacular photography in the open bamboo forests.
- Golden Monkey Tracking
Mgahinga is the only place in Uganda where you can find these striking, orange-tinted primates.
- The Experience: Unlike the methodical gorillas, golden monkeys are fast and playful. They live high in the bamboo zones, providing a lively and energetic forest encounter.
- The Batwa Heritage Trail
In Mgahinga, the Batwa Trail is led by the Batwa people themselves.
- The Highlight: We take you to the Garama Cave, a 342-meter-long ceremonial site where the Batwa king once hid from enemies. The tour concludes with a hauntingly beautiful traditional performance in the darkness of the cave.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is it easier to see gorillas in Mgahinga than in Bwindi?
The vegetation in Mgahinga is predominantly bamboo, which is less dense than Bwindi’s thick canopy. This often allows for clearer visibility and better light for photography.
What happens if the Nyakagezi group moves across the border?
While they were once known for crossing into Rwanda and Congo, the group has been resident in Uganda for over a decade. In the extremely rare event they are not accessible, Frena Adventures works with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to rearrange your trek or provide a suitable alternative.
What is the age limit for Golden Monkeys?
Similar to gorilla trekking, the minimum age is 12 years old. However, the hike to see them is generally shorter and less steep, making it a great entry-level primate experience.
Where should I stay for a luxury experience?
We recommend Mount Gahinga Lodge. It is the only luxury lodge situated right at the park entrance. Each stone banda has its own fireplace and private butler—perfect for warming up after a day on the volcanoes.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
The Virunga Circuit
We recommend combining Mgahinga with a stay at Lake Mutanda, where you can canoe across the mist-covered water at dawn before heading to the volcanoes. It is the most picturesque corner of Uganda, reserved for those who appreciate the quiet majesty of nature.
