The Savannah’s Great Comeback

Akagera National Park is a testament to resilience and one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation success stories. Located in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, it is the country’s only savannah park and the last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species. At Frena Adventures, we celebrate Akagera as the “Big Five” finale to any Rwandan circuit, offering a scenic landscape of rolling hills, acacia woodlands, and Central Africa’s largest protected wetland.

The Frena Perspective: A Private Wilderness Reborn

Once nearly depleted by the aftermath of the 1994 genocide, Akagera has been meticulously restored through a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks.

  • The Big Five Restoration: Following the reintroduction of lions (2015), eastern black rhinos (2017), and a major translocation of 100 southern white rhinos (concluding in June 2025), Akagera is once again a complete Big Five destination.
  • Low-Density Safari: Unlike the crowded plains of neighboring countries, Akagera offers a tranquil experience. In 2026, it remains a “hidden gem” where you can often track a pride of lions without another vehicle in sight.
  • Bi-Modal Exploration: We specialize in “Land and Water” safaris, transitioning from 4×4 game drives in the northern plains to private boat expeditions on Lake Ihema.

Signature Akagera Experiences

  1. The Northern Plains Game Drive

The northern sector of the park is characterized by open grasslands and is the best place for classic wildlife viewing.

  • The Sight: Large herds of buffalo (over 4,000 strong), Masai giraffes, zebras, and elephants. It is also the prime territory for spotting the newly reintroduced white rhinos grazing in the open.

  1. Lake Ihema Boat Safari

Lake Ihema is the largest of Akagera’s dozen lakes and is a sanctuary for aquatic life.

  • The Experience: Drift past some of the highest concentrations of hippos in East Africa and enormous Nile crocodiles basking on the shores.
  • The Highlight: For birders, this is the place to spot the prehistoric Shoebill Stork and the vibrant Papyrus Gonolek.

  1. Nocturnal Safaris (The Night Shift)

Akagera is one of the few parks in the region where night drives are highly productive.

  • The Experience: Armed with powerful spotlights, we track the “night shift” leopards on the hunt, hyenas, serval cats, civets, and the wide-eyed bush babies.

The Frena “Big Five” Extension

We recommend pairing Akagera with a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park. It provides the perfect ecological balance, from the misty volcanic rainforest to the golden sun-drenched savannah.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How far is Akagera from Kigali?

It is an easy 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Kigali International Airport, making it possible (though not recommended) for a day trip. At Frena, we recommend a 3-day stay to truly experience the northern plains.

Is the park suitable for families?

Highly so. The park is well-fenced and secure, with luxury lodges that cater specifically to families, including swimming pools and educational “behind-the-scenes” conservation tours.

Can I see all the Big Five in one day?

While it is possible, leopards remain elusive. For the best chance of a clean sweep, we suggest a night game drive specifically for the leopards and an early morning drive in the north for the lions and rhinos.

What are the best luxury stays?
  • Wilderness Magashi: Located in a private concession in the north, offering the most exclusive and luxurious experience in the park.
  • Ruzizi Tented Lodge: A sophisticated, eco-friendly retreat on the banks of Lake Ihema.
  • Mantis Akagera Game Lodge: An iconic lodge overlooking the lake with a beautiful infinity pool.
